HELP!! WHAT’S THE BEST PLACE IN LATIN AMERICA TO TRAVEL?

i am recent college grad (spanish major) and i would really like to travel to any latin american country for 2 weeks. it’s more of a vacation/celebration, however there are some stipulations…

1. i would like to find a cheap place to go, south america is preferred (but central america seems to be cheaper so far. (flying out of seattle)
2. i HATE the typical tourist places. i realllly like to get to know the people, culture, have interactive experiences, stay in hostels etc.. *** i don’t like hot tourist sites nor tourist-type stuff with guides etc…

my problem is that i cannot find a website that offers this info, they only offer all-inclusive deals and as relaxing as that sounds, i’m interested in getting to know the PEOPLE!! PLEASE HELP!!! i would surely appreciate any suggestions on places to go, things to see, even places to eat!!
THANK YOU!!

I see that someone else said Guatemala and honestly you cant pick a better place to go to. It is amazing. I enjoy every time I visit. I stay with my grandparents in San Seabastian. The closest big city- Xela- is about 2 hours away. We have flown during the summer and our flight cost $300 round-trip from Seattle to Guatemala City. During Christmas and Easter it is way more- about $700 round-trip. The bus to San Seabastian or Xela is about 60 Quetzales- about $7.60. Hotels… well I’m not sure considering I stay with my family but the place is amazing! You get to see how people actually live and how they work. The buses to travel around from one city to another cost hardly anything- a few cents and the food is so cheep too. We went to Panajachel, (Lake Atitlán), this time and it is awesome!!!!!!!! I loved it. It has little shops and a beach. There really isn’t anything else there except shops and places to eat but its fun! You can take a tour boat around. It takes you to different towns and shops. They are ethnic and really in touch with Guatemala. Guatemala City is amazing if you can search for a hotel and just stay in the outskirts. Any restaurant you find will most likely be tasty. I hope this helped a little!
