We are going to Europe this Fall. What is acceptable clothing for us to bring with us? What kind of shoes would be appropriate but still comfortable enough for miles of walking?
Any kind of clothing that is considered decent in most countries, so covering more than a swimsuit would do.
Depending on the area you travel to, and where you are from, you might want to pack some summer clothes. Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and even the southern parts of France will still have nice temperatures.
On the other hand, if you plan to travel Norway, Sweden or Finland, or into the mountains all over Europe, you may need winter gear already.
Most Europeans walk in jeans or like weight trousers, T-shirt, shirt or thin sweater and a light rain jacket in fall. Later in the season winter coats get taken out of storage or fleece jackets added as the temperatures go down.
Fall is mostly a relatively wet time in most of Europe, so be prepared on getting soaked a few times.
Just take a second pair of shoes to change into when back in the hotel, and make sure you have more than one outfit from the skin out, so you can get dry things on when needed. A good rain jacket will help you a lot, better than an umbrella, as often the rain comes with lots of wind.
For shoes, most people seem to walk in running shoes or tennis shoes. I prefer light hiking boots, or hiking shoes, which are available in many different fits so you can choose the ones you best like.
Of if you are more for open footwear, sandals. You will get wet feet more than once, but they will dry out fast too.
But whatever you chose, make sure they fit proper, are broken in and you have waterproofed those shoes that need water proofing.
If you need a more detailed advice you will need to add more in details, like in which half of which month you expect to be in which part of which country.
And even then we can mostly just give general advice, as weather is not really predictable in most of Europe.
You can get average rainfall, temperatures and weather forecasts if you just search on the name of a city or country and weather. You can add a C or F to find sites you will understand.
Added:
If you go to religious important places, whether they are curches, cathedrals or from other religions, make sure you cover yourself from shoulders to at least elbows and knees, in some cases long sleeves and ankle length skirt or trousers will be better.
And when going out, a nice outfit will be appreciated, a nice skirt and blouse will do for women, shirt, slacks, dark shoes that do not scream ‘sports’ and a tie for men. In France and farther south a nice dinner requires this already, further north it will be appreciated.
