If you’re great at tracking down the best cheap travel deals and craftily cutting costs, you could be in with a chance of winning the title of ‘Britain’s savviest traveller’. Travelzoo is a top travel deals website and is currently on the hunt for Britain’s Savviest Traveller. To get things started, the team at Travelzoo have come up with some great tips of their own, including some good advice on how to keep the cost of air travel on the ground.
Booking a premium economy seat when travelling with a scheduled airline, for example, is a top tip for those keen to get an upgrade when flying. These tend to be the smallest cabins and are often overbooked so you’ve got the best chance of being upgraded to a better seat.
The experts at Travelzoo also recommend that you always book a return ticket – even if you don’t expect to use part of it – because they often work out to cost less overall, not just per mile. Another good trick to enjoy cheap travel on your next holiday is to fly during the week rather than at the weekend is generally less expensive.
Instead of letting your old mobile gather dust in a drawer, you can build up air miles by recycling it. A Nokia 5800, for example, can earn you as many as 750 air miles if it’s in good condition. There are a number of great phone swap schemes around at the moment which can offer hundreds of air miles in exchange for a second-hand phone.
Travelzoo’s search for Britain’s Savviest Traveller will be running until the 9th July 2010. Entrants have until Friday 9th July 2010 to describe in under 300 words why they should win the title of the ‘savviest traveller’. The competition will also be running in Germany, France and Spain. The winner in each country will receive a dream holiday for two and will be announced as his or her country’s savviest traveller. In the UK, Mark’s Travel is sponsoring the holiday prize worth £5,000.
